A new restaurant has recently joined the Ossington Avenue community, a notable neighbourhood featuring trendy restaurants, bars, and nightlife. The Ossington Stop has been open for three weeks on the northwest corner of Dundas and Ossington (The restaurant is located on the north side of Dundas Street West, just west of Ossington Avenue).
The iconic black and white bus is the only feature identifying the restaurant which does not have its name written on its exterior. William Tavares, co-owner and Denis Ganshonkov, Executive Chef and co-owner decorated the interior of the restaurant with an industrial minimalistic look. The exposed brick wall and incandescent light bulbs are contrasted with a black wall featuring with white lines forming an asymmetrical pattern. Fifteen industrial metal bar stools provide seating around circular bar tables. If there’s no room, a church pew located outside of the restaurant currently provides additional seating. It is not clear how the pew got there and what will happen to it come winter.
Chef Ganshonkov was charged with the task of creating a comfort menu where all items are priced $10 or less. The result was the creation of a 15 item menu containing $2.50-$10. Tavares highly recommends the Pulled Pork Sandwich with Slaw ($6), BBQ Side Ribs with Slaw ($10), and Khinkali Dumplings ($2.50 each). Beverages are also all under $10–beer $4, wines $5, shots $4.
Tavares, an established figure within the region (Fishbar, Salt Wine Bar), decided to give the community a small token of appreciation by offering free samples of three of The Ossington Stop’s menu: Russian steamed bun (containing pork and cabbage); Chicken n’ Waffles (roasted chicken with honey garlic sauce on a Southern savory waffle); and Baked BBQ Side Ribs (pork ribs covered in a sweet-spicy BBQ sauce).
The Ossington Stop is an on-the-go establishment that “feed the masses”. Customers can stop in for a quick bite or take their orders to go. It’s a great option for cheap late night eats in the Ossington neighbourhood.
